Using Oral Therapies to Treat Cancer

Many existing treatments for cancer, as well as new ones being developed, can be taken orally in a pill or capsule form. These treatments are called oral therapies.

Oral therapies can be taken at home and offer both advantages and challenges in treating cancer. Many patients find that oral therapies are more convenient to take and require less time in a doctor's office. However, some patients find it difficult to manage side effects of oral therapies and maintain a regular treatment schedule at home, without the support that comes from getting infusions at a doctors' office or cancer center. Oral therapies are also paid for in different ways by drug manufacturers, insurance plans, and Medicare or Medicaid. It takes knowledge and a proactive approach to get the financial assistance you may need to pay for your oral therapy.

The Wellness Community recognizes that you and your caregivers need information up front on what oral therapies might offer you as a form of treatment for your cancer, as well as tips on how to manage side effects, and how to access financial resources and support.

This brochure answers your questions about:

  • Communicating with your health care team
  • Types of oral therapies
  • Finding a treatment schedule that's right for you
  • Managing side effects
  • Financial information and resources
